22 The season may be appropriate to a pointed reminder of
what the current celebrations are supposed to mean. At Easter
time the celebration of Christ's Resurrection can be used
to point to the culmination : it is the assurance that he
will judge the world.
23 Another touch attempting to bring home the meaning of the
remarks to those who listen to them. If they are actually
smiling the " perhaps " can be omitted.
24 Again a pointed allusion, as clear as its prototype, the
altar to the Unknown God. Armistice celebrations, " Trafalgar
Days," and whatever victory anniversaries may follow
this war. Needless harrowing of feelings must be avoided,
but if man chooses to commemorate his follies and their consequences,
it is right that he should be reminded of what it is he celebrates.
25 "The Atlantic Charter " inspired this. Even as
these words are written suspicion is rising against the intention
or the power to carry this charter into effect.
26 Exploiting popular disillusionment. The idealism which
(they tell us) characterized many in and after the last war,
seems to be signally absent while this is waged, and unlikely
to revive when it ends.
27 Jer. 10: 23.
28 Again to remind them that it is they we address. Paul at
Athens is far away. The message must be brought home.
29 John 3: 16.
30 Acts 16: 30.
31 Or some other suitable introductory work. See chapter 7.
32 Acts 2: 13.
33 1 Pet. 2: 23.
