Example
3: " Upon this Rock: The Church's One Foundation "
(a) Type and plan: " Heresy " lecture in that it
assails the foundations of the Church of Rome, but "
First Principle " also in its emphasis on the Kingdom
of God, the Return of Jesus and the Resurrection. It attempts
concentrated exposition of a single short passage ("
Difficult Passage," perhaps), and is very far from negative
in its aim. Note that here and there an adequate knowledge
of the doctrines of Rome is necessary.
(b) Reading and Hymns: -Matt. 16: 13-31. Hymns should include
186.
(c) Development:
(i) The prominence of Peter: hi our memories of "the
twelve apostles"-in Matthew's list (10: 1)-in call (John
1: 42, Cephas-Peter)- in speech (Matt. 16: 16, 22 ; John 6
: 68 ; Matt. 26:33) - in action, as walking on the water,
defending Jesus with the sword, entering the empty tomb-in
failure and rebuke, as in two of the last examples, the denial
of Christ, and in Matt. 16:23.
(ii) Special importance of " Upon this Rock": if
R.C. interpretation is true, we must become subjects of the
Pope immediately; 42 if false millions of men are deluded
by a blasphemous apostasy.
(iii) Words a divine revelation: "My Father": Note
parallel-" You are Jesus, Son of God "-"You
are Peter, son of John "-not your father (flesh and blood),
but mine, revealed this truth. Hence supreme importance of
words, rather than person.
(iv) " The Christ": i.e., the fulfiller of Israel's
hopes-Ezek. 21 :27 and Luke 1 :32. " The Son of God ":
compare John 20 : 20 and 1 : 12-13. This confession sums up
the work of salvation.
(v) " Rock " and " Stumblingblock ": Peter
in support and opposition. Note remarkable parallel:
1."
Blessed art thou"... "Get thee behind me."
2. " Thou art Peter " ... "Satan."
3. "Not flesh and blood, but my Father in Heaven "
"Not the things of God, but the things of men."
4. " Upon this rock I will build my church "
"Thou art a stumbling-block (R.V.) unto me."
(vi) Contrast: "Upon this rock " with "I will
give unto thee."
(vii) The Keys: certainly promised to Peter and no one else-Popes
or Apostles. Used for Jews in Acts 2: 41, Gentiles in Acts
10: 47 ; 11 : 18. Door opened never yet shut (but the time
may be short).
(viii) Peter's supremacy fades at this point. Acts 10 marks
his climax and decline; the next phrase in Matt. 16 applies
to others also,
(ix) " Binding " and " loosing ": compare
18 : 18 and John 20 : 23, power of guiding church and punishing
delinquency, e.g., Ananias (Peter), Elymas (Paul), Diotrephes
(John),
(x) The Church: Organization in Acts 2 :42 (N.B-" Apostles'
" not " Apostle's "-not Peter's). Baptism,
simple observances, hope,
(xi) Peter and Paul on the Foundation : 1 Cor. 3:11; Ephes.
2 : 20 ; 1 Pet. .2 : 7-8 ; 1 Pet. 5 (showing his estimate
of himself),
(xii) The Gates of Hell: inanity of R.C. view; Jesus's own
interpretation in Rev. 1: 18.
(xiii) Victory over Hell: 1 Cor. 15 : 54.
(xiv) The House built on a Rock : Matt. 7 : 24. Although it
is not likely that many Catholics will come to listen to such
a lecture, the Catholic net spreads wide, and it is; designed
to show the baselessness of papal claims to such, 1 while
having a profound positive message to all.
