THE
INCIDENTALS OF PREACHING
This needs a word only. The initial Bible reading is a part
of the lecture, and should not be the subject of an embarrassed
search when the lecture is due to be delivered. The hymns-
if hymns are to be sung- are much better chosen by the speaker
than by the president, and he can add to the cogency of what
he wishes to say by planning the hymns to contribute. This
needs only one warning: we preach from the Bible, not the
hymn-book, " As we have just sung " may call our
attention to what we thoughtlessly uttered, but it provides
no proof of its truth.
